Writing Excerpts: The Secrets of Delvena

12:14

For Mother's Day, I gave Mum a chapter of my novel. It was the first time I'd shown anyone my writing since I was little.

I was nervous as I passed my present over. "Happy Mothers' Day."

Mum smiled and looked down at the sheets of paper in her hands. "What's this?" she wondered.

"It's a chapter of my novel," I replied.

Mum's eyes went big. "Wow! Thank you."

That evening, she read my chapter. At the end she gave a little cry. "You left it on a cliff hanger! I want to know what happens next."

I smiled. Maybe I'll give Mum the next chapter some other time.

Today, I thought I'd share a couple of excerpts from my novel with you. I hope you enjoy this taste of my writing.

“But I can’t do this. I don’t have the strength, the courage. I can’t do it,” Nikita cried, wobbling a little at the thought. “What if I’m not good enough? I’ll curse everyone.”
“Believe in yourself for once,” Benji advised her. “You’ll be surprised at just how much you can do.”
“But…” Krista cut off Nikita.
“You’re the only one who can do this. If you won’t do it then Eamonn has won.”
***
“What was it you were wanting in the library?” he asked. Nikita felt her knees giving way beneath her.
“Nothing,” she squeaked.
Eamonn chucked. “No one comes into a room for no reason,” he told her. “So what’s the truth? Did Adrian send you to fetch me?”
“No, sir,” Nikita said, hurriedly.
“Then why are you here?” Eamonn asked, frowning.
“I’m having a break,” Nikita told him.

“And?” Eamonn said. “What does that have to do with anything?” He looked even more confused.
Think! Nikita looked around the room for inspiration. “I love to read,” she said. In truth she had no idea how to read, but that hardly mattered. “I came here to see if the library had any good books.”
Eamonn looked at her with an amused look. “You came to the royal library? Do you realise that no one gets to read from the royal library except royalty and nobles?” he asked.
“No sir,” Nikita said with a sinking feeling. Well there goes that plan.
***
“Where did you learn to dance?” Nikita asked.

“I have no idea!” Krista cried. “In fact I was making it up as I went along. Did I stand out like a sore thumb too badly?”

Nikita shook her head. “You fooled me. If I didn’t know you, I would have thought you were a noble,” she told her.

“Who says there isn’t noble blood deep down in me?” Krista asked.

    2. Sophie, my story is about the adventures of three beautiful sisters (aged 11, 9 and 5). I hope it will be as good as The Penderwicks. I have just one chapter left if The Penderwicks. My mum is going to read it to me tonight! We love reading aloud together.
